VirusHC – Configure Renoise for Mac – Complete Tutorial.

Entering Preferences…

To avoid time-out and data-loop situations, we have to make few minor changes in Renoise MIDI Settings window.

First, open the MIDI Settings by clicking Preferences from Renoise menu and open MIDI tab.

Now that MIDI settings window is open, make sure Virus MIDI Input is not being assigned to the project.

In image below, I’m going to assign CS6x MIDI Input active as it is on my AMT#1 Port #1. This allows me to play any selected track from my master keyboard while working with the project.

Once you’ve assigned your ports, you can close the Preferences window and we can focus on inserting the plug-in.

Insert the plug-in

At long last, we can finally add our VirusHC plug-in to the project. If you don’t have AudioUnit / VST Instrument tracks in your project, simply add one by clicking the arrow down icon next to “No plugin loaded” text in the right hand side panel.

Once the list opens up, find VirusHC Editor from Mystery Islands Music folder and double click it to add it in to your current track.

Plug-in GUI will appear once it is inserted. We can see that VirusHC Editor is assigned to track 00 from the top right corner of the DAW screen.

Make the connection, again.

Access VirusHC is now inserted and we are ready to take next measures for successful connection.

You can also see that plug-in says it is registered (follow steps here) as I’ve inserted my license.key properly.

Before selecting MIDI input and output, lets make sure our model is selected properly and make sure the Device ID matches with the hardware setting.

Next we can choose MIDI IN port, which is where our Virus is connected in at and also MIDI Out port which sends data to Virus.

Once you select MIDI OUT Port, plug-in will start to seek for the Virus on that specific Port while listening to Hardware messages from the selected input port. Once the connection is successfully established, plug-in display will say “Plug-in is ready to go!” as we can see below.

Synchronizing Notes to DAW Delay Compensation

Our best experience to synchronize notes with your DAW is to use the DAW built-in compensation features. In Renoise this means that you should be automatically delay compensated with MIDI, Instrument and Audio Tracks.

Next we will add new MIDI track in the project.

Why separate MIDI track? Our plug-in can not get delay compensation data from the DAW, because we do not process audio with it. Therefore MIDI goes out from our plug-in immediately, without any respect to DAW delay values.

Select Track 02 and click MIDI tab in from the top row.

Now that we selected Track 02 and opened MIDI tab and we have set MIDI Out port to Virus, we can add in some notes & chords as we wish. Make sure to point the port to the same port where your Virus is connected at.

Automating Parameters in Renoise

Since we are not experts of using Renoise it was a bit tricky to find out how to automate parameters, although our background comes from the times of Fast Tracker II.

First off, we need to return to our track, where the VirusHC plug-in is located at. Next we scroll or search meta plug-in from bottom left corner called “*Instr. Automation”. Once its located / found, drag the effect unit to the channel. See image below.

Now we can choose which parameter we want to automate. In our case, we chose Filter Cutoff.

Double click the Filter Automation title in the bottom left corner to engage automation mode for it.

To do automation, there are several ways, but we chose to draw it with pencil tool, see image below.
